ENGR 103 - Spring 2015
Freshman Engineering Design Lab
“Using Human Motion to Generate Electricity”
Project Design Proposal
1 Deliverables
- A functional prototype of the knee mounted generator that will serve as a proof of concept
- A 3D CAD drawing made using Creo Parametric
2 Stages of Design
- Research and Design Selection - Browse through existing designs to determine the ideal method of power generation.
- 3D Modeling and Printing - Model and fabricate the initial mechanical design of the device.
- Electrical Design - Determine the necessary components, and their relative layout in the circuitry.
- Manufacturing and Assembly - Mechanical and electrical systems will be assembled and integrated into a working prototype.
- Testing the Prototype - Perform various stress and functionality tests, and refine the device as we go. If any major flaws are discovered, the design will be adjusted and re-fabricated.
- Final Prototype - Fabricate the final design, with necessary modifications from testing stage.

4 Budget
At this stage in the project, it is difficult to assess what the prototype will cost. Given that the majority of manufacturing is intended to be done through 3D printing, the budget currently depends on the cost of the materials. Through the course of the project, if the initial design proves to be ineffective, and is changed, the budget will be adjusted to accommodate the modifications.

Table 2: Projected Budget
4.1 Mechanical Hardware
Mechanical hardware will include the materials required to make the splint and brace portions of the device, as well as any part of the generator that cannot be 3D printed. For the prototype, these will be constructed from wood and textile materials. All of the other mechanical parts can be fabricated with the 3D printer.
4.2 Electrical Hardware
Electrical hardware includes the external battery, the wires, and the adapters that will be necessary to complete the circuit. It also includes the magnets that will be used to generate the current.4 Flow Chart
good! Also include a flow chart of how the team proposes to design this prototype.
